Dreaming of water: how to work out what it means for you

3 min read

Symbol dictionaries give you a list of meanings for water. Here is why that list knows almost nothing about your dream, and what to look at instead.

You dream of an enormous wave.

You look up the meaning of water and immediately find several answers: emotions, the unconscious, purification, change, rebirth.

The trouble is that a list of meanings knows almost nothing about your dream.

Because swimming calmly in a clear sea and watching a huge wave come at you are already two completely different experiences.

A symbol does not mean the same thing to everyone

Dream dictionaries can be interesting for discovering the associations traditionally attached to a symbol.

But they have an obvious limit: they know neither your dream nor your history.

Water can evoke something very different from one person to the next.

If you love swimming, if you are afraid of the ocean, if you live by the sea, or if you have just been through something significant involving water, the same symbol will not necessarily take on the same meaning.

Start by looking at the water in your dream

Before looking for a definition, try going back to the scene.

What kind of water was there?

A calm sea?

A swimming pool?

A river?

A flood?

Heavy rain?

A wave?

Was the water clear or murky?

Were you in it, beside it, above it, or running from it?

These details completely change how the dream can be read.

Look above all at what you were feeling

The emotion is often more interesting than the symbol on its own.

You can dream of a wave and feel fear.

But you can also dream of that same wave and feel excitement, fascination, or even relief.

The scenery is similar. The inner experience is not.

That is why an automatic interpretation along the lines of “water equals emotions” stays very limited.

What becomes genuinely interesting with a journal

A single dream gives you little context.

If water comes back regularly in your dreams, on the other hand, you can start to notice when it appears and what comes with it.

Perhaps it always returns during certain periods.

Perhaps it often appears alongside the same person.

Perhaps your water dreams are very different depending on your emotional state.

That is where keeping a journal over time becomes particularly interesting.

You are no longer only looking at what water is supposed to mean in general.

You start to see what it seems to stand for in your own dream world.

Three questions to ask yourself

1. What exactly did the water look like?

Describe the scene without trying to interpret it.

2. What were you feeling in the dream?

Fear, calm, joy, urgency, curiosity, relief.

3. Does this image remind you of anything in your life right now?

Do not force an answer. Sometimes a connection appears immediately. Sometimes not.

And that is fine.

An analysis is still only a proposal

An analysis can help you see connections you had not thought of.

It can also be wrong.

The aim is not to let an app decide for you what your dream means.

What is most interesting is putting several things side by side: the account itself, your emotions, your context, and what returns in your other dreams.

Then seeing what genuinely makes sense to you.
